Why Context Travel

Tours led by scholars, not scripts

Context's guides are working art historians, archaeologists, chefs, and academics in the city you're standing in. Groups stay small — usually six or fewer — so the conversation is real, not a megaphone.

Context Travel is a certified B Corp, Doorways' editorial partner on the mindful-travel side. We share the same standards on who books a private guide and who waves a flag.

Want something not on the list?

A private cooking class with a Michelin chef. A vineyard with the founder. A truffle hunt in November with the dog who actually finds them. Tell us the brief and we'll have our partner build the experience around your week.

Questions about booking experiences

Last updated June 3, 2026

How much does a private tour guide in Italy cost?

Our private tours start at about $350 for a 3-hour walk and range up to about $1,000 or more for VIP and after-hours access. Prices are for your private group, not per person, and full-day trips with a driver cost more.

Are private tours in Italy worth it?

For the big sites, yes. A private guide moves at your pace, answers your family's questions and gets you past the ticket lines. Our tours are led by archaeologists, art historians and chefs who live and work in each city.

Who runs the tours on this page?

The tours are run by Context Travel, whose guides are local scholars and experts. Doorways selects the tours we recommend to our villa guests, and you book directly with Context through these pages.

Are there tours for children and teenagers?

Yes. We offer family tours in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples and Palermo, including Colosseum and Vatican tours for kids and a Julius Caesar tour for teens.

Can you arrange experiences at our villa?

Yes. If you are staying at a Doorways villa, your concierge can arrange private chefs, cooking classes, wine tastings, boat days and drivers as well as these city tours.

Which Italian cities do you offer tours in?

Rome, Florence, Venice, Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Bologna, Milan, Lake Como, Verona, Naples and Sicily.
