The Renaissance bones of the building have been kept honest, marble fireplaces, cross-vaulted ground floors, wide plank floors above, with kitchens and baths modernised without losing the patina. A pool sits in the formal garden behind the house, screened from the road by a line of cypresses. The setting is the Tuscany people came for, the clay hills, the cypress avenues, the chapels in the middle of a field, all within an easy drive. The 1800s detailing means the rooms are smaller and more layered than a modern build, with character on every staircase. The property works best for a group that wants a house that feels lived-in rather than staged, and for travellers who plan to use the villa as a base rather than a hotel.
