About This Villa

A restored fortified masseria in the Puglian countryside, with thick limestone walls, vaulted ceilings, and the original courtyard and well intact at the centre of the property. The house works because the architecture does most of the work — the rooms stay cool through August without much help, the courtyard is its own outdoor room, and the long table sits where the farmworkers used to gather their tools. Alberobello and the trulli are forty minutes away; Matera, the cave-dwelling city of southern Basilicata, is just under two hours and worth the day. Savelletri on the coast is closer than either, twenty-five minutes for the swim and the seafood lunch. The grounds include olive groves and a vineyard that still produces the household wine; the swimming pool sits a discreet distance from the main house.

2 King bedrooms with view over the olive grove and the sea in the distance, en-suite bathroom with large shower, dressing room, generous private terrace

All bedrooms have air conditioning and satellite TV, all bathrooms are provided with hair dryer and bathrobes.

The light-filled rooms are designed with a contemporary flair that creates a feeling of dream and beauty. The neutral palette throughout the villa is both soothing and refined, and splashes of color add vibrancy and depth to the space, while shiny metallic accents and mirrors sprinkle touches of glamour. High-end furnishings, plush generous sofas, and beautiful artworks adorn the welcoming living room, media room, and dining room, which all convey a feeling of modern, easy, sophisticated living. Superb care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the original structure, and it shows especially in the modern, fully equipped kitchen that completes this floor.

3 King bedrooms with independent entrance and direct access to the garden and to the swimming pool area, with en-suite bathroom with large shower

The main attraction of Leonda’s estate is the magnificent L-shape shimmering swimming pool set in the meticulously maintained grounds. Relax in the serenity of the outdoor living spaces and the breathtaking landscape where privacy is paramount. Whether with a romantic al fresco dinner under the pergola, or by lounging inside the loggia or enjoying a picnic within the olive grove, at Villa Leonda you will experience the inimitable Italian Dolce Vita.

A captained gozzo from Otranto or Santa Maria di Leuca down the coast to Punta Pizzo, the sea caves at Grotta della Poesia, swim stops between, lunch on board.

Puglia

A day in Lecce

Ninety minutes south. The baroque churches in their honey-stone glow, an artisan papier-mâché workshop (a Lecce tradition), dinner at Bros' or Alex Ristorante.

Puglia

Masseria cooking class

A morning with a Pugliese chef at the working masseria. Orecchiette hand-pinched one by one, taralli baked in the wood oven, lunch under the pergola.

Puglia

The olive oil harvest at a family frantoio

November and December. Pick olives in the morning, watch them go into the press in the afternoon, taste the green peppery new oil within hours.

Puglia

Cisternino sunset aperitivo

The most beautiful of the Valle d'Itria white towns. A glass of Negroamaro on a piazza terrace at dusk, then dinner at Trattoria Bere Vecchie.

Alberobello at dawn

The trulli town before the day-trippers arrive. Coffee in the lower piazza, then a slow walk up the empty Rione Monti with the conical roofs against a pink sky.
