A frescoed entrance hall, a music room with a 1911 Steinway blond-wood Grand piano, a kidney-shaped heated pool curving into the hillside with a waterfall at one end, seven acres of gated parkland, one thousand feet of private lake shoreline, and a dock with two courtesy speedboats. Villa Maria Taglioni is a neo-classical lakefront estate on the southwestern shore of Lake Como, only five kilometres from Como. Once owned by the celebrated Swedish ballerina Maria Taglioni, the villa welcomed Bellini, Rossini and Franz Liszt in its drawing rooms and has been beautifully restored to its nineteenth-century splendour.
Across three floors are eight bedrooms (sleeps 16), a frescoed entrance hall, a music room with a 1911 Steinway blond-wood Grand piano, a formal living room and a separate dining room — both with decorative fireplaces — and a large, fully-equipped kitchen. An additional sitting/TV room on the first floor opens onto a terrace with lake views; the second floor has its own living room with a bar/kitchenette.
The estate sits down a quarter-mile gated road guarded by a quaint old gatehouse, in the midst of seven acres of luxuriant gardens and woods — towering magnolias, rare cypresses, camellias, azaleas and laurel. A casual outdoor living space has been arranged under a copper beech for shade and al fresco dining. The kidney-shaped heated pool curves into the hillside, nine feet deep, with a waterfall at one end and unobstructed lake views.
One thousand feet of exclusive lake shoreline runs along the property, with a private dock and two courtesy speedboats at guests' disposal. A wellness area includes an equipped gym, sauna and Turkish bath. There is an elevator to all floors and ample underground private parking through an electronic gate.
Service is white-glove: a resident butler, an in-house chef and a grounds team are at your disposal six days per week, with breakfast served 8:30–10:30 am, lunch 12:30–2:00 pm and dinner 7:30–9:30 pm. The village of Blevio is a six-minute walk through the estate gate — a small harbour piazza, a 17th-century church, the village garden with its pergola.
For those arriving by air, the villa's own water gate connects to the International Como Aeroclub three miles away — a seaplane taxi service can deliver you directly from Saint Moritz, Venice or Capri.
Villa Maria Taglioni shares the estate with its sister, Villa Serena. Both villas can be booked together as the entire estate for larger groups.

Lake Como
The most cinematic of the lake's villas, reachable only by water. The gardens, the loggia, the rooms exactly as they were when the last owner left them.
Lake Como
Mistral at Villa d'Este on the water for the Michelin night out. Il Gatto Nero in Cernobbio above the lake (long the favourite of George Clooney and most of his neighbours) for the more local one.

Botanical gardens that have been the standard for two hundred years. Azaleas in May, lemons in June, oleanders in July.

Como has been Europe's silk capital since the 1500s. A morning workshop at a family silk house — printing, weaving, or scarves — at one of the producers our concierge knows.
